Date End: 2012-03-16\n\nExpressions&rdquo\; showcases new works by artist
s Kelly McCullough and Susan Patterson in a variety of media in the Dodge
House Gallery.\nMcCullough is a portrait artist and still life painter wit
h a studio in Providence\, R.I. She studied and later taught at the Charle
s Cecil Studios in Florence\, Italy. Her paintings have been exhibited in
California\, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. McCullough continues to refin
e a philosophy of seeing and a naturalistic method of painting used by man
y of the master European painters since the 17th century\, including Reyno
lds\, Lawrence and Sargent. Following sight-size technique\, the artist pl
aces her canvas at a given distance from her subject or object\, frequentl
y moves back and forth between the two\, and typically employs quick\, loo
se brush strokes to develop her painting. McCullough's undergraduate degre
e was in photography and her works also reflect this influence\, through a
focus on light effects\, reflections\, shadows and highlights. McCullough
's main interest is portraiture\, but in still life she is drawn to painti
ng shiny\, reflective objects\, which over time and repeated studies devel
op their own personalities\, attitudes and relationships.\nThe inspiration
for Patterson's most recent body of work began four years ago with an art
school assignment to paint a spontaneous work that related color to music
. Patterson has sketched musicians for some time in a variety of venues. I
t was through a conversation with a member of the Rhode Island Philharmoni
c\, however\, that she considered depicting scenes from the Philharmonic M
usic School\, particularly the &ldquo\;AHA&rdquo\; moment when the student
s &ldquo\;get it&rdquo\;. Following an introduction to the Music School in
East Providence early last year\, she began to observe the students in th
e studios. Several gesture sketches and drawings were completed in the spr
ing of 2011 forming the basis for this exhibition. Patterson notes that on
e can draw many parallels between the study of music and art &ndash\; both
involve a process of commitment and dedication. In this body of work she
attempts to reflect the spirit\, passion and dedication of the students. I
n doing so\, she states that she discovered a similar emotional response i
n herself toward the completion of each work.\n \n\nStart time: Monday-Fri
