Are you an aspiring writer? Would you appreciate some tips from a professional? Now is your chance to take a writing workshop with local professional authors. Providence Public Library (Central Library, 150 Empire Street) announces its 2011 monthly Sunday Writer Workshop series beginning Sunday, January 30.
These programs are made possible with help from the Robert Danforth Watkins Fund for Lifelong Learning.

Introduction to Writing Books for Children and Young Adults with Author Hannah Goodman Sunday, January 30: 2 - 4 PM Trustees Room, 3rd floor About the Instructor Hannah R. Goodman, M.Ed, is the author of YA novel, "My Sister's Wedding," which won the first place award for The Writer's Digest International Self-Publishing Contest, 2004, children's book division. She published the follow-up, "My Summer Vacation," in May, 2006, which went on to win a bronze IPPY in 2007. The latest Maddie book, Fear of Falling, was released in the fall of 2009. A former high school English teacher, Hannah owns her own consulting company, The Write Touch. She is a writing coach and consultant to authors and would-be authors; assists adults in need of resume writing and career counseling; offers tutoring for elementary through college students in writing across content areas; and, assists in the college application process, from SAT prep to the writing of college application essays. How to Use Your Own Life to Write a Murder Mystery with Author Jan Brogan Sunday, February 13: 2 - 3:30 PM Trustees Room (3rd Floor) We all write from what we know: learn to use your life and what you know to create a credible sleuth and develop a murder mystery plot. This class will cover character development, plot structure, research tips, revision techniques and writing discipline. About the Instructor Jan Brogan is the author of the critically acclaimed Hallie Ahern series set in Providence. She has taught writing at the Cape Cod Writer's Center, the Boston Learning Society in Needham, The Brown University Learning Community and The Learning Connection in Providence. Her first novel Final Copy, won The Drood Review of Mystery's Editors' Choice award and was named one of the best eight mysteries published in 2001. A Confidential Source (Mysterious Press, April 2005 ) received a rave review in The New York Times Book Review and was chosen by The Mystery Guild Book Club as an alternate spring selection. Yesterday's Fatal (St Martin's Press May 2007) was named a "Killer Book" by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association and one of the summer's best reads by Northeast Public Radio. Teaser, also, from St. Martin's Press, received four stars from Romantic Times Magazine.
Breaking into Publishing with Author Hannah Goodman Sunday, March 20: 2:00-3:30 PM Trustees Room (3rd Floor) Breaking into the publishing world is nearly impossible.if you don't understand the process. In this discussion, Hannah will share her own journey, reveal what works and what doesn't, and offer tips for success. Topics include: the monetary realities of a first book deal, self-publishing as a starting (and/or finishing) point, how to approach an agent, whether to submit directly to a publisher, as well as how to use contests, conferences, or MFA programs as a "foot-in-the-door."
Site Spectacular: Inspiration through Language and Place, a Poetry Writing Workshop with Poet Kate Schapira Sunday, April 10: 2 - 3:30 PM Barnard Room, 3rd floor Writers in this poetry workshop will work with and within the library itself, transforming observations, images and language drawn from the Library's collections into poems through a variety of short exercises. Especially recommended for writers who have trouble getting started! Please bring a notebook that you can write in standing up (smaller is better) and something to write with. We'll be reading as well as writing. If you have difficulty walking or standing, please get in touch with us beforehand-we'll be happy to revise the workshop to make it possible for you. About the Instructor Kate Schapira is the author of two books of poetry (TOWN, Factory School, 2010; The Bounty, Noemi Press, forthcoming 2011) and numerous chapbooks. She teaches writing at Brown University, the University of Rhode Island, and as a Writer in the Schools at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School.

Making a Memory Book (Part II) with Author Kathleen Hughes Sunday, May 8: 2:00 - 4:00 PM Trustees Room, 3rd floor Use your writing skills and creativity to tell your stories - you may start a new family tradition! Memory books and scrapbooks can contain important pieces of a family's history. Their thought-provoking contents assembled from photographs, keepsakes, and written reflections can help you and your loved ones recall and honor the people, places, and times that you hold dear. About the Instructor Kathleen Hughes, author of Dear Mrs. Lindbergh (W. W. Norton & Co, 2004), attended Yale University and earned her MFA in Fiction at the University of Iowa Writer's workshop. Born in Indianapolis, she moved to Rhode Island in 1999. Kathleen has been a Writer in Residence at Portsmouth Abbey School, has worked at the Providence Phoenix, and has chaired the English department at Providence Country Day School. A mom, wife, teacher, writer, daughter, sibling, and friend -- she believes that writing our stories is vital, fundamental work.
