Premiered by Festival Ballet Providence in 2003, Viktor Plotnikov's Carmen is a sordid tale of passion, jealousy, and murder. The ballet chronicles one man’s obsession with the woman he will never have. The production begins with Michaela alone on stage. Michaela’s prologue warns that something has happened between Don Jose and Carmen. Don Jose, a guard, arrives to arrest Carmen but while he is left alone to guard her, he falls victim to her charm. Carmen convinces him to help her escape from prison and join a gang of smugglers she leads. However, after watching Carmen flirt with other men, Don Jose kills the object of her affections in a jealous rage.

Devastated by what he has done, Don Jose leaves the smugglers, but he soon returns only to find out that Carmen has her eye on a renowned bullfighter, Escamillo. As the crowd departs for the arena to watch the bullfighter, Don Jose confronts Carmen and implores her to love him. Carmen only becomes more annoyed with Don Jose and as she rejects him one last time, Don Jose kills her.

With Viktor Plotnikov's intriguing and innovative choreography, don't miss out on this passionate ballet.
