What Cheer Day 2012: “Rhode Island at War”

Discover what the Rhode Island Historical Society has to offer during our first ever What Cheer Day on October 13th! Our theme this year is Rhode Island at War, and we’ll host interactive activities and events at all four of our sites:

• At the Aldrich House, take part in academic roundtables focused on Rhode Island at War including a keynote by Bruce MacGunnigle, former president of the Rhode Island Sons of the American Revolution and the Rhode Island Genealogical Society.
• At the Library, learn about Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island’s Civil War Hospital, and war-time colonial broadsides. Take a "sneak peek" tour of the RIHS Collections!
• Meet at the John Brown House to explore Revolutionary War sites on College Hill, enjoy a Civil War mitten "knit-a-long" as well as children’s activities, and interact with Revolutionary War reenactors on the lawn of the John Brown House Museum.
• The culminating event of What Cheer Day will be an evening Gala at the Museum of Work & Culture in Woonsocket to celebrate the Museum’s 15th anniversary. Join us for a festive evening as we remember the impact the war eras had on manufacturing in Woonsocket. The evening will feature dancing and music by the group “For Sentimental Reasons”, an art auction, special exhibits, food and drinks. Black tie optional or, to add a special flare, come in your favorite war-era costume. We will!
